Effects of vitamin D supplements on bone mineral density: a systematic review and meta-analysis

- Antioxidant Supplements to Prevent Mortality

-When It Comes to Bone, Vitamin D Supplementation Falls Short

In general, this study showed no significant increase in bone-mineral density with vitamin D supplementation. Such a result is consistent with the understanding that vitamin D acts primarily to increase gut absorption of calcium (not directly on bone metabolism), and these results support the Institute of Medicine's conclusion that adults with baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels >20 ng/mL do not require supplementation. - See more at: http://www.jwatch.org/na32572/2013/10/22/when-it-comes-bone-vitamin-d-supplementation-falls-short?query=etoc_jwwomen#sthash.9DuDjeUK.dpuf

USPSTF: No Evidence That Vitamins Prevent Cancer or Cardiovascular Disease

By Kelly Young

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has determined that there is not enough evidence to recommend for or against most vitamin and mineral supplements — alone or in combination — for preventing cardiovascular disease and cancer. The statement is available for public comment on their website. A review of the evidence appears in theAnnals of Internal Medicine.

The group did, however, recommend against taking beta-carotene or vitamin E supplements for disease prevention, writing that vitamin E conferred no benefit and beta-carotene increases lung cancer risk in smokers.

The group says that a healthy diet "may play a role in the prevention of cancer or cardiovascular disease."

The recommendations do not apply to children, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and people who are hospitalized, have chronic illness, or have a nutritional deficiency.
